Addiction
Cigarette smoking is addictive.
Nicotine in cigarette smoke is addictive and other aspects of cigarette smoking may also contribute to the difficulty of quitting smoking.
QUITTING SMOKING
The only way to avoid the health effects of cigarette smoking is to not smoke.
The best way to reduce the health effects of cigarette smoking is to quit, and quitting smoking greatly reduces serious risks to health.
Quitting smoking can be very difficult and successful quitting may take several attempts. The Surgeon General has stated that “Quitting is hard. Usually people make two or three tries, or more, before finally being able to quit. Each time you try to quit, you can learn more about what helps and what hurts.”
Difficulty in quitting should not deter smokers who want to quit from trying to do so because millions of cigarette smokers have successfully quit.
For help in quitting smoking call 1-800-QUITNOW (TTY 1-800-322-8615), which is a 24-hour toll-free number to the National Network of Tobacco Cessation Quitlines.
